So he was sent to live in, most likely, a better old folks' home than he would have gotten here. Ironic.

@porcupinepunch6893 Because you would expect the prosecutor(s) to want to send the guy to somewhere he would suffer, not somewhere he would be comfortable? Not exactly a mystery.

@terruskaa I am not commenting on the morality of the issue, only the lack of consistency or logic with their sentencing and punishment. In fact, I disagree with sending 90+ year old camp guards to prison because "muh long arm of the law." All of this "I was following orders isn't an excuse" from clowns on the internet who likely would make the same decision in their shoes makes me sick.

@yummy_bumy6650 Forgiveness is mandatory and inevitable. Otherwise, the conflict never ends. If you don't forgive, your son who fought in the war you instigated and saw all his friends die, probably will.

I'm now imagining Velma saying "Jinkies! I think I just found a clue!" and raising her hand to reveal it is covered in blue smears.

@bobleyvonschmeedlepeedlest5162 By that vein of logic, everyone currently living in America right now participated in and benefited from the genocide of the native Americans. But it's okay because we did it so we don't have to punish ourselves.

@Soap.-- "german Healthcare is one of the best." Yeah... my German family would disagree with you on that one. You get what you pay for.

@jordielninopollo8130 You'd rather go to the Eastern Front instead? Come on.

@cnutsiggardason2014 It's always an excuse, as long as you're not on the losing side. The Nuremburg trials, while they might have produced the desired outcome, were not very impartial at all. Hearsay was frequently used as evidence in that trial.

@t1tanfallpr025 There, doing what? Standing guard at a camp while another more zealous, more evil officer threatened him with death if he didn't perform his duty? Gee it's almost like there's a reason why the Nuremburg trial prosecuted the high-ranking officers instead of random grunts and camp guards.

@krislarsen6546 It's not a lesson we'll ever learn because it's the nature of a high-trust society. The Germans believed that they needed to protect their nation, not even necessarily that their cause was just. Erwin Rommel for example was not a Nazi, and was nearly killed by his own side for his opinionated opposition, but he was arguably the best general in the German army. Nobody wanted to go back to the bread lines and clownish inflation of the interwar period. That's the thing about authoritarianism, the only thing that makes it look appealing is crushing poverty and misery.
