@viljamtheninja What? Adverbs can be used to modify adjectives. "Very" is an adverb in the phrase "You are very big." If OP's interpretation is correct, the phrase would be "VIP-ly big," maybe supposed to mean "very big" or "very important(-ly big)" but I'm skeptical.

It would be really dumb of them to reject foreign English teachers, who they are presumably recruiting to bring some flavor of their culture to the classroom, because of his non-native culture.

@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Most likely strict parents. Unfortunately it's kind of the standard there. Some parents are very obsessed with their kids doing as good as possible because "I didn't have these opportunities when I was your age so you better take advantage of ALL OF THEM." I remember reading an article about the Japanese government changing the weekly school schedule to give kids more time to rest, because cram (Saturday) school has become the norm there. So many parents are so obsessed with their kid getting an edge over the other kids, that weekend schools have been common for a while now. There was actually enough outrage from the parents at this schedule change that they successfully petitioned the government to go back to what it was before. It's crazy, but at the same time, it makes you realize how Japan got to be so successful so fast, despite having very little land area, lower population than most of the other most successful nations, and being the only nation on the planet to have been nuked once, let alone twice.
