@helvete_ingres4717 It was less that he was an enemy of the people and more that he was an enemy of the wrong people who had political power. Athens was not a state free of corruption.

You'd be able to avoid most of the external infections because you'd have the super overpowered knowledge that pouring strong alcohol on any wounds you get prevents you from getting sick later. But conventional diseases, yeah, that's a tough one.

The 70-pound figure is completely absurd. I would dare to say that is heavier than a medieval knight in full plate armor intending to ride only on horseback. Metatron is right in that 70 pounds is light for a modern soldier. On the march, a typical modern soldier properly equipped will have well over 100 pounds of kit, and in combat it will be lighter but I believe still in the region of 70 pounds or heavier. Not to mention that, as others have stated, the Greeks viewed athleticism with extreme reverence. Even most of the famous philosophers believed that to be a philosopher you also had to be a ripped Chad. Plato believed that warriors should also be learned and accomplished poets. The superiority of intelligence and physique went hand in hand to them.

@chriskalogrias926 I've read that the average casualty rate for most battles that relied on melee combat, even many into the future (like the pike-and-shot era) was about 10%. After about 10% of your fellows died in visceral melee combat near you, people tended to break off and run. Not so in modern war. There is a reason why WW1 is known as the "Great War." In Verdun, over half of the men who died there are still buried under the battlefield. Casualty counts in the hundreds of thousands were simply unheard of before that point unless it was an intentional slaughter of civilians. Objectively speaking, we'd all be a lot better off if modern war was decided with spears, swords and bows.

@EksaStelmere That's a very silly analysis of world events because it assumes that an American, Canadian, Laotian, Japanese person, etc. all share in the experience of any war that their individual cultures commit to. Japan was in near-constant war during sengoku jidai but those wars were safely ignored by everyone else in the world. And, furthermore, the nature of these wars is very different from each other. Earlier Japanese wars were steeped in honorable tradition which, while not flawlessly followed, did help lessen the overall death toll quite a bit. Limited resources and land tend to cause people to limit the scope of war. On the other hand, the sprawling desire for world domination across virtually every remotely powerful nation in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries saw war reach new heights of totally unrestricted carnage.

Do people actually think Greek philosophers were atheist or agnostic? Plato writes about metaphysics at length and about the components of the human soul.

@paulheinrichdietrich9518 To be specific here, if I recall right the "Divine Craftsman" myth is from The Republic, which is actually a blueprint for an ideal state. The divine myth described there is one that is intended to be knowingly spread to the people as a form of governance for an ideal culture, not what he actually believed in. However Plato did believe in the soul and if you believe in a soul you have to believe that the soul comes from somewhere.
