@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor the problem is that Lara's original character was a 2nd wave feminist and therefore didn't believe that being sexually attractive was inherently degrading. She would routinely walk around naked in front of her butler and be amused at his embarrassment.

@weareharbinger914 Angelina Jolie was an insanely good cast for the character. I didn't think the movies were perfect but I couldn't have imagined a better actress.

@ichikuraii the reboot trilogy was still a regression. Just not as severe. It was not so much the fault of Lara herself, rather the writers seemed determined to put her in strangely dark circumstances that constantly made the viewer wonder if this was someone's fetish fulfillment fantasy.

@Fordo007 It is Mary Sueish in a weird roundabout way, if you look at the greater context. Mary Sues often have tragic backstories to give them an edge. Lara Croft didn't have one before, but since these are prequels, they actually make her overall character more Mary Sue-ish than it was before. IMO, there's nothing wrong with having a shallow, powerful character if your media isn't intended to be deep or thought-provoking. Calling classic Lara Croft, or a similar character like Duke Nukem, a "Mary Sue" is like using a scalpel to slice a tomato. It is overly analytical for the subject matter; her character was never intended to be that deep or multi-dimensional. But adding this layer of tragic backstory to the character takes it in a weird direction that just doesn't vibe with the rest of the IP. To put it another way, reading Berserk and learning about Guts' sexual abuse as a child would have been way, way weirder if it were Duke Nukem instead.
