There are a significant number of clones that surpass the original, mostly because the original devs got caught up in their success or simply dropped off the face of the earth for some reason. Another great example is Escape from Tarkov and virtually every other extraction shooter. Now I haven't actually played EFT, but that's because everyone who does only speaks negatively about it and almost every video I see about it is negative. That, and I don't find the idea of messing with my inventory for 30 minutes only to die after 10 minutes very appealing. STALKER: GAMMA is basically a single player Escape from Tarkov with a lot more interesting stuff going for it PUBG and most other battle royale games are in a similar situation. When less harsh and unforgiving BR games appeared, people stopped playing PUBG.

@Michael.Gunner I love dark, Gothic art styles. I still think the original Diablo 2 is one of the best looking games ever made because of how the weird sprites made from rotoscoped models make the game look more like an oil painting. The whole game looks like a baroque painting in motion. VS's issue is one of artistic cohesion. It just doesn't have a lot of effort put in to make the art work as a singular style. This game's style is very simple, but it works. Everything has the same cutesy pixel anime vibe.
