Idols are a little different because both the celebrity and the fans are willingly engaging in a fantasy. This is why vtubing took off so naturally. It was only a very minor change for the idol to be an anime girl because it was already a fantasy to begin with. Almost all fans maintain awareness that it is a fantasy, but mentally ill ones do not. In many ways, it sucks. However, it has some pros. Think about how every little detail of a celebrity's life is shared in the news here in the west and how that's just treated as "normal." Being an idol protects you from that, to some extent. Sure, people still obsess over you, but you have a whole management firm who is trying to help you keep your life a secret.
