  2.  @8Kazuja8  Men get stuck with those same aesthetics too for the huge majority of the time. Very few men actually want to play as a huge disgusting monster dude even if the aesthetic is appealing to a niche and is well-designed objectively. They want to be some chiselled guy of varying background/aesthetic. This extends even to non-visual media. D&D, for example, has a character distribution of 50% Human Fighters across its entire player base. I think you should take a cursory glance at the vtuber scene. Vtubers are interesting because most of them are actually weird people with niche interests. They're not e-thots in the traditional sense of the term; boring women with very little personality who flaunt themselves. They also seem to be open to using very unconventional character designs. One of them just premiered on VShojo as a cockroach girl, of all things; very few girls would find that appealing even in an anime style. It's an interesting effect where people with niche interests but who are still interested in streaming are drawn to vtubing. The designs and appeal are decentralized instead of driven by what appeals to 51% of viewers. Personally I believe that most people have an undeveloped or under-developed sense of imagination and creativity. They find it hard to imagine a character that is not themselves, especially for extended periods of time or from a holistic angle. Or they simply don't understand the appeal. Activities like creative writing, theater, and tabletop role-playing help foster the ability to imagine unique characters that are not just self-inserts.
