@Kishimatto we do, and sadly it's because of the privatized prison incentive. judges are bribed by prison executives to throw people in jail because it makes them money. they can make an insane amount of money, being paid by the state to house people, while also exploiting them for cheap labor because prisoners do not have a right to a minimum wage. it's even better because criminals who are thrown in prison are much more likely to go back to prison because their opportunities are drastically reduced. believe me when i say i'm not the only american who wants to change this but such are the pitfalls of capitalism. overall, i'd still say it's an economic system that's served us well, but it has its problems

@JohnSmith-zk3kd it's been proven, thanks to the complete lack of enforcement in many cities providing a ton of data, that any crime spree is mostly perpetuated by a few dedicated career criminals. if you chopped off all their hands, it absolutely would stop, without a doubt

@raphg6319 a security guard would likely be fired if he did that, most private security guards are not authorized to use lethal force unless their lives are in danger. sometimes, not even then, because it makes the company look bad and mires them in legal fees. a private citizen, ironically, usually has the most freedom in shooting someone as long as they believe there was a threat to their life. second only to a cop

@Soleft here's a fun thinker: how is a black guy who was born in a ghetto any different from a poor immigrant who just moved here? is the black guy worth more sympathy because someone in his family might have been a slave many generations ago? why does the immigrant have to work hard but the black guy doesn't?

chicago is fucking terrible, but it also annoys me how europeans read mainstream media stories about chicago, LA, DC and NY and think they know everything about the 3rd largest and most diverse nation on the planet i once had a chat with a stranger at a local train station and she said "i just flew in from chicago" and i had to resist the urge to say "congratulations"

@ionicafardefrica you do realize that "maybe one time" literally determines whether you live or die, right? you could just not be a dumbass and use a proper gun safe or storage solution, or you could willingly forfeit your right to self-defense due to your insecurity and inner thoughts about murdering people which you project on to other people. i mean, i'm making assumptions with that last comment, but i can't imagine why else people would willingly disenfranchise themselves. guns are insurance policies against violence, nothing more. you don't forfeit your health insurance because "you don't plan on getting sick," for example. unlikely shit happens to everyone and you never know what unlikely event it will be until it happens

@PoeticMercury i don't normally like to play partisan, because both parties are shit and answer to the same corpos anyway, but this has been the democrat party's marketing MO since the 19th century at least. they target disadvantaged people (used to be the Irish/Italian immigrants) and promise them the world. if they're not disadvantaged (white women) they will convince them that actually, they are, and voting for them is the only way to fix that. statistically women vote democrat by a significant majority. the ones who don't are almost always married. white men can be excluded because while they are a significant part of the population, if they can convince every other group to vote for them, it won't matter. when you combine this with the United States' population makeup, which despite what holier-than-thou Europeans or self-hating American academics will tell you, is the most diverse and multicultural first world nation on the planet, you get situations like this where minorities who have been convinced that everyone hates them are free to do whatever they want thanks to a lack of tough crime policy, voted against by, among others, women.

@BMoser-bv6kn it should, but it doesn't, and you get the same effect with mainstream news. that is, people who commit crime just so they can be famous. it's just that the effect is more direct and immediate if a streamer or reporter were to get money just for airing crime footage. if that were allowed to fester, you'd soon have streamers/reporters who give cuts to criminals as "royalties" for their "performance"
