It's worth mentioning that the tweet is from a third party and their conclusion is based purely on conjecture. However, there are a lot of signs that it isn't going to go well for Johnny. At a minimum, they can contrive reasons to hold him in jail with no trial (Japan has NO right to a speedy trial and people can be held in jail pending trial indefinitely) until his visa expires and deport him immediately. It depends on whether they think it's worth it to spend tax payer dollars on making him suffer in prison. This is why you don't fuck around with the law in foreign countries.

@josea.r.avelino181 Yawn, a social darwinist. That shit stopped being edgy in the 19th century dude.

Confession is the ultimate standard in legal procedure. Japan prefers to keep trials as basically a formality. They don't send you to trial unless they're completely sure -- in their minds at least -- that you will go to prison.

Basically from what I understand the law is almost entirely in the police department's hands. They investigate your crime, judge how long to hold you and whether or not you should be released. If you go to trial, you're fucked because it means they think you are definitely going to prison or suffering some sort of penalty. Conviction rates are high in the US too, at 95%, but 99% is a pretty significant increase. I also don't know if plea deals are a thing there at all. This tweet is almost completely unsubstantiated. They're assuming that the Japanese police will do the worst possible things that they could to him. However, I do expect them to hold him without a trial for about 3 months until his visa expires and then deport him. They are known to contrive reasons to hold you in jail before a trial and take advantage of the law to do so (by holding you in jail for only one charge at a time, in sequence). If I were in charge, it is what I would do as I would not want to waste taxpayer dollars on making this loser suffer, but it depends on how petty their legal staff and police chief are.

@fuzzy-02 You can't judge "for yourself" on massive social issues like this. It is impossible. You must rely on data from other people, and that data will likely be faulty, regardless of what the political goals of the data's source are. The alternative is using anecdotal evidence from your own life, which is not a good standard. Injustice like what you described happens in the US as well, especially in the case of families and divorce. It merely depends on which judge you get in court. At least the foreign husband in the scenario you described doesn't have to pay child support or alimony.

He did and they forced him to apologize traditionally by kneeling. That was probably their warning.

I've heard that speaking at all is strictly regulated. Everything is strictly regimented and minor infractions are punished harshly

@jackcristo1628 Yeah, I know, but from what I understand judges will contrive new charges anyway. From what I've heard, they've already re-cycled his jail time once and immediately sent him back on a different charge.

@cattysplat Sleep deprivation is pretty bad. However, this is just rumor. Don't believe random tweets you see online.

@rykehuss3435 "The West?" I gather from your use of "rubbish" that you are from the British isles? Did you forget that the US is the world leader in incarceration? I'll give you a hint, we didn't do that by rejecting confessions.

@miriamkapeller6754 Got any numbers for that claim?

Nope, they'll just contrive a reason to keep him in jail until the visa's expired. They'd be stupid not to.

@mk_gamíng0609 Ironically, as bad as all of that is, there's virtually no way their crime rate is higher than that of almost any Western country. They don't have gang warfare out in the open in major cities, for example, or cartel members sitting across an easily-penetrated border that carry out almost ritualistic killings just to impress their peers. Nor do they have mass shootings of any kind. It's hard to criticize them in light of these facts, but yes, in a vacuum any nation's justice system seems awful.
