@DeclanDSI it can be a lot of things, small town America isn't very well supported much of the time and they often resort to buying shit from corporate retailers or restaurants. poor harvests can affect it as well, avocados are known to suffer for this from time to time because they're grown in california another big thing is horrible city ordinances, you may have heard about groceries that have been shut down in certain areas of certain cities causing a relatively new term to be coined, "food deserts" where usually poor people have to drive an inordinate amount of time just to go to the grocery store. these are usually due to completely unmitigated waves of theft that the city police can't (due to stupid laws) or won't crack down on, but can also be for other reasons i'm fortunate, i live in the middle of a big city in Texas so plenty of good food is available, but it's not the same everywhere in the US. basically, our people are suffering because too many politicians act like mustachioed cartoon villains and want to perform social experiments on poor people

@joefer5360 when they grind it up and add all the preservatives to it so they don't have to worry about it going bad in the supply chain

@dilkondeff they don't "deliberately choose to eat shits and get bloated," the processed food is often the cheaper option. not as true today as it was a couple of decades ago, but the food lobby is trying. it's worse in small town America where there are less businesses and big corporations like Wal-Mart and McDonald's buy up most of the commercial real estate. same thing is happening to Mexico right now actually they are trying hard to compete with our obesity rate thanks to the Coca-Cola corporation. they will price Coke so it's cheaper than bottled water

@larin4587 chicken and rice are still cheap, but if you want fresh vegetables, it will begin to run up the price, and that's without accounting for the problems we have with chicken factory farming in particular the biggest problem is that an American can buy chicken and rice and spend about 30 minutes to an hour prepping it, or they can spend a similar amount on premade food. the astronomical increase of fast food prices may very well be what Americans need to stop eating like shit

@dilkondeff we have those, they are expensive, and good luck getting there without a car (what i have to deal with).

@DeclanDSI eggs, no, our chicken farming is absolutely legendary, so chicken products are not a problem (unless you get salmonella) but vegetables can indeed be a problem depending on where you live
