Hate to say it but it isn't all fun and games. This exact same situation happened to my father and I at home. Lost pit bull wandered towards us in our driveway and was very friendly. My dad wanted to give him some water and food and then send him on his way. However the moment he opened the back door gate, he lunged at our dog's (a weimaraner runt rescued from euthanization) throat without even a warning. Luckily, despite the fact that our dog was a total pacifist and never attacked anyone or anything, he was very fast and managed to dodge the lunge. My father panicked and threw him over the fence into the neighbor's yard, which luckily did not have any more dogs in it. Pit bulls are usually friendly to people, it's other dogs you have to be careful about.

@practicalone2 I think it's more likely because that pit bull was a stray. Dogs can be raised well and raised poorly, like humans. It's just harder to raise a pit bull properly. I simply wish that people who own dogs like pit bulls would take responsibility for the differences in breeding and train them properly.
