I've developed this same inverse relationship with reactions over time. Usually it is because the other person is massively overreacting. It helped that my own father was kind of the opposite of what you described. He had anger issues, which have thankfully faded over time as he got older and started doing more cardio. This taught me not to react when I was young because I didn't want to feed into a cycle of escalation. His brothers had it much worse, in one case leading to his death. I cannot take people who overreact very seriously as a result. That said, I am not immune to overreactions either -- I have buttons just like any other human -- but then when I realize people aren't taking me seriously, it's like a "snap back to reality" moment. It helps keep me level-headed.
