The hypothetical thing is something I really need to take to heart. I find talking about stuff like this WAY more interesting than the weather, or the status of Major World Sportsball Series League.

@4321user-_ In my view small talk does not include detailed conversations about anything, even sports. Establishing a common interest is usually my go to for making friends. I don't think it requires trust in a stranger to talk about something that is not directly related to either of your personal lives, even if it is in depth. For example, an in depth conversation about military history. Of course, the tricky part is getting there without launching into a lecture when the other person isn't interested, but I like to think I've gotten decent at that (because I notice immediately when others do it to me).
