Here's a fun fact most people aren't aware of. Throughout all of history the vast majority of humanity got married when both parties were in their 20s. The "50 year old guy marries a 12 year old girl" thing only happens in the absolute richest echelons of society because the parents are Machiavellian assholes who want to acquire resources by marrying into the other family. So no, women weren't treated as property by the vast majority of society even in ancient times. Both members of a marriage in working class society need to have skills and be physically mature enough to eke out a living together. Just like now. The gesture from the father is simply one of approval and it is one of honor for the groom, to receive his approval in marrying the daughter. It means that there isn't going to be a severing of ties after the marriage and that everyone will be a happy family afterward. It doesn't mean that the father is literally the only person who matters in sanctioning the marriage.
