My mother didn't teach me anything except how to boil packaged ramen noodles and microwave frozen food. My father taught me how to test a steak for doneness by pressing on it. Now I reverse-sear steaks. I roasted a goose for our family dinner last Christmas and made an incredible gravy to go with it. I've made tomato sauce from scratch. And I've made real ramen from scratch as well. Cooking is fun and rewarding. If you are a human that eats food, you are doing a disservice to yourself by not knowing how to cook.

@maxwelljacobfreedom Sounds like you're not even aware that all the best chefs in the world are men

@SouthoftheHill Omelettes are one of those things that are easy to get started on and nearly impossible to master. It's why traditional chefs like Ramsey use it as a measuring stick for a chef's skill so frequently. I can technically make an omelette that's totally edible, but it will have no fluff and the egg will be slightly overdone so it will be a bit chewy.

@Anne_Onymous And you can have your diabetes. Sounds fair to me.

Pizza is actually one of the easiest things to cook. There are pre-made crusts at every grocery store and it doesn't take longer than 2 hours to make a crust from scratch, with only about 20 minutes of actual labor involved. The elitist Italian chefs will tell you it takes a day; they're wrong. You can use your favorite jarred sauce from the store. Once the crust is made, it takes about 15 minutes of applying the sauce/toppings + baking the pizza.

@DG-mk7kd Any timing problem with cooking can be solved by actually paying attention to a clock or timer, followed by trial and error. It isn't as if eggs are expensive. If it smells like it's burning, stop cooking. Apply ketchup to your overdone eggs, and take note of the time you took to cook them and stop sooner next time. If something is cooked unevenly, use less heat.

How do people take an hour on average to cook dinner? I can whip up dinner in 30 minutes easily. I only take an hour or more to make something for a special occasion. Boiling pasta: < 10 minutes. 15 minutes if it is rice. Baking or frying vegetables: < 15 minutes. Cooking a protein: 30-35 minutes, if it's chicken, substantially less if it's anything else. All of these things can be done simultaneously, with little difficulty.

@Julesy980 I find it hard to empathize with that. Omelettes can be a little tricky for a beginner, but scrambled eggs are as simple as beating eggs and stirring them while they cook in the pan until they're firm. It's one of the first things I could make decently. Maybe you use too much or too little heat? I typically do it right at medium heat. I've grown to prefer soft-boiled eggs ever since eating (restaurant-quality) ramen. Cooking those is just a matter of knowing how long it takes to get the right consistency, which can be annoying because the timing window is small. Either the yolk is too hard or too soft. For my pan and stove, it's about 7 minutes of boiling (I don't heat the water up with the egg already in it like some do). Put eggs in ice water immediately after they're done, it also makes them easier to peel. Pan-frying chicken is something I typically don't do unless it's already cut up into bite sized pieces, but just apply lower heat and use a pot lid. It's actually harder than most think to overcook chicken. Better chicken is actually cooked slightly more (like 3-5 minutes) than necessary to make it safe to eat. It becomes firm yet still juicy.
