You can squeak by as a programmer without a higher understanding of the discipline as long as you have discipline and attention to detail. There is no logic. They just ape what their favorite heroes they read about in their history/humanities classes did and think it will work. They want to be MLK disciples and do sit-ins, factory workers during the 1800s, etc. It's all a game or a fairy tale to them and they're the heroes.

Your friend needs to stop kidding himself and get a new job rather than trying to climb up the rope as the fire gets higher and higher. Lay-offs are very often the result of very bad decisions beyond the control of the employees.
