The sad thing is there was very likely no technical failure in their security. In other words, the hackers didn't have to resort to cracking passwords using algorithms or exploiting weaknesses in their website. Since Twitter admitted it was social engineering (translation: someone was stupid enough to click on that suspicious link in an email), it means that chances are there was someone high enough up in the ladder to have access to all the secure user data, while also stupid enough to get conned by one of these scammers. Then they used their credentials to get everyone else's credentials involved in this scam.
