He is, but he's kind of a hack if I'm honest. He had no real vision for Minecraft and mostly just adopted mods into the core game for features. It's also really easy to be outspoken against the mainstream when you're independently wealthy.

@Sefcear Which is fine, but he kept going until he could sell it to MS. Most sources I've read will tell you that Notch kind of distanced himself from development of the game after a certain point. I know it's hard to argue with the absurdly successful game that is Minecraft, but it's not really a cohesively designed game. The simple and addictive nature of the building is what carries it. As well as the fact that it was sold to educational institutions and considered safe for even the youngest children to play. It was also the first of its kind. Games shouldn't be designed by committee, they should be designed by a visionary. Designing a game by committee is sort of like livestreaming making a cake and polling for every ingredient you add. (Funnily enough there are some streams that are like this and they turn out about as well as you'd expect). If a developer asks his community what to add next, many people see this as a sign of a good developer. I see it as the sign of a someone who has succeeded too much and is panicking.

@bezceljudzelzceljsh5799 Most of the old features of Minecraft after the most fundamental mechanics like mining and placing blocks are indeed just old mods adapted into the game. It's clear he didn't really have a vision for the game beyond building stuff.

@josephvictory9536 "Evidence" is not really relevant here since we're talking about design critique. I can make comparisons to people like Justin Bieber, or Joe Biden. Although that would be harsh as I believe Notch has more value than either. Evidence of success is not always proportional to the quality of a product. Furthermore, since he's the most successful dev as you've pointed out, I doubt he needs you to defend him. Rather than assume that outstanding financial success must be evidence of outstanding quality, you should treat it as the anomaly it is.

@TuhljinTampergauge You've already decided I am your enemy and there is clearly no room for nuance. Why bother posting?
