@sysbofh The funny thing is that his beginning was doing cringeworthy gameplay commentary videos screaming at things, clearly meant for adolescents. That somehow blew him up and now he's basically retired, just posts a video like this every once in a while. Despite me not appreciating his content, his life strategy seems to be very well planned out, and he seems to not be a political activist.

The left-right paradigm has destroyed meaningful political discourse in first-world nations. If people actually approached politics on an issue-by-issue basis, they would realize that even the extreme left and right in the US agree on more than they disagree, and that would be bad for our betters.

@yellingintothewind The burden of doing this isn't as great as you would think. As long as a project has been cleared of malware to this point, all you have to do is skim through the latest commit each time a change is pushed to make sure malware was not added.

Linux isn't for normies, full stop. Sorry, but this is a pipe dream. There is perhaps a subset of normies, who only use their computers to write documents or check emails, that might be okay with using a desktop distro like Mint or Ubuntu. But if you want to do more with your computer, then you need to also be invested in tinkering with it to get it to happen on Linux. If you're a gamer, forget it. Even with Proton and native NVIDIA drivers, it's still a massive pain in the ass unless you only play one game that you know works. You know how there are people who complain about PC gaming being too much hassle? Linux adds even more hassle on top of that. Creative stuff like video editing, music or audio creation/editing, etc, forget it. The moment something breaks, due to user configuration error or some package maintainer doing something stupid, the user has to search through forum posts to try and figure out what went wrong in an OS that is totally foreign to them. There is no support hotline. It's just not within the sphere of normie capability.

@meirkohen263 Those 5k people, or at least the maintainers/primary contributors, are funded by some of the biggest corpos on the planet -- including Microsoft, who, hilariously enough, use Linux internally by reports that I've heard. They aren't random contributors. I have nothing against Linux, but honestly I'd be amazed if 1% of his fanbase bothered to switch. I'm a software developer by trade. I installed Linux on my home PC in order to train myself some years ago. It took at least a couple of months before I learned enough to consider myself a competent user, i.e. could fix most problems by myself or with a simple web search. Most people just do not have the patience or interest to learn that like PewDiePie does, who is effectively a retired guy living his dream life. You have to be interested in tinkering with your computer to get it to work the way you want, because Linux offers so much power to the user that it comes with a ton of responsibility.

You're confusing incompetence and apathy with malice. The incompetence stems not from the diversity contributors (who are incompetent, make no mistake) but the people who appointed them or are funding their contributions. Imagine you're an executive at a big company, like IBM or Microsoft, and you get told by some international investment firm that you'll get $X dollars (where X contains at least 8 zeroes) if you do more to promote diversity and inclusion. So you hire some diverse people, but you have nowhere to put them. So you pay them to contribute to open source repositories so you don't damage your own closed source software. This way you get two virtue points with one stone; you're contributing to both diversity and open source software.
