Situations like the marine in Phoenix and others that I've seen always have one thing in common that is not true for Dale's scenarios: the guy with the weapon isn't on guard. That Marine pretended to be calm or aloof and instantly disarmed the robber as he walked through the door. Disarms are insanely risky if the assailant has their full attention on you. These are incredibly stupid high risk strategies. The correct thing to do is "wait your turn" or in other words, wait until the assailant is distracted by something.

@Meerkat More Come on. He clearly said "only one round in the chamber" meaning that the gun has no magazine in it or an empty magazine. You shouldn't try so hard.

There's a manual on hand to hand combat written by the British for their commandos in WW2 and it does actually have a couple of techniques for dealing with a guy pointing a gun at you at point blank range. Difference is those guys expected to be fighting German soldiers behind enemy lines, and I think the only two scenarios they covered is a guy pointing at your chest or pointing at your back with a pistol while your hands are up.
