It's not even necessarily a problem with that, some people just develop an intolerance to gluten as they get older. My mother has a mild intolerance now, possibly in part because they've had to reduce gluten intake to help my father get over his diabetes (he is fine now and quite healthy). My workout buddy has stopped taking whey protein because it started to make his throat burn. I think we're beyond "gluten free as a fad" at this point. Gluten is so ubiquitous that avoiding it is far more hassle than it is worth if you have no outstanding conditions.

@Pinkgobi I see people discuss lactose intolerance all the time. I've actually known two people who are lactose intolerant. Not sure if I've ever heard of someone with a proper milk allergy. I've never known someone, or even heard of someone, who was allergic to eggs though. I do know one person who developed a disgust reflex to eggs and can't even bear the smell without getting queasy. I empathize with that; I developed a similar reaction to whiskey after almost dying from it the first time I got seriously drunk. Nut allergies were the top concern when I was in grade school. Teachers and cafeteria staff were sure to ask about peanut allergies all the time.

@dontaskme7004 gluten is a protein from a specific grain source, humans originally evolved to eat fish, bovids (i.e. beef and similar meats), fruits and vegetables. bread is a relatively modern (last 10k or so years) convenience that allows us to feed entire cities. civilization as we know it did not exist before grain agriculture

@dyent OK. Well, they must be eating less gluten for a different reason then.

It's because the top quoted response to the issue was from a moralist vegan. They are, generally speaking, obnoxious people, and people online love to take shots at obnoxious people. Sorry if you are one, but you'll likely only prove my point by responding angrily to me. It's really hard to take people seriously when they ignore the existence of animal-only proteins and pretend everyone can or should survive without them. It's similar to demanding that everyone should just shut up and eat gluten. Similar to allergies, we can't control how our bodies are formed out of the womb, and it's hard to find veganism appealing when so many practitioners look like they've just come out of a concentration camp.
