I had a similar experience with my friend in high school when seeing that awful GI Joe live action movie (the first one, it was amazing enough it had a sequel) but nobody in the theater seemed feel the same way. I was a bit surprised, because it was a terrible movie.

@ScooterAKalldayy That's not true at all, Japanese people when surveyed majority believe that anime characters are Japanese. Not to mention all of the shows which explicitly take place, in Japan. Just because you interpret a cartoon character a certain way doesn't mean everyone else also does. Japanese, Chinese and Korean people can all have very pale skin. It's hard to imagine that given the context which Dragon Ball set for its aesthetic when it first came out that you would interpret Goku as anything but a Chinese martial artist living in the countryside.

@Syrus_Priest It's really obvious that the area Goku and Chichi are from are supposed to be a fantasy version of rural China. It'd be like trying to argue that The Shire isn't based on England, or something to that effect. I guess he is an alien, but that didn't really come up in the story until Z and was a bit of a retcon. It was supposed to be a mythological reference originally

@JohnBrown-tw2qi Toriyama wanted to pass the torch to Gohan since Cell saga at least, you can tell the story sets up for it, but apparently the Japanese fans were outraged that Goku would be replaced so in the end he was forced to stick with Goku. As a lot of Western fans would say, they're mad at them for being obsessed with the "orange hillbilly."
