  3.  @Num1koolaidman  I'm a programmer that understands most of the underlying infrastructure for a game like WoW, and it is indeed complicated. But the price is very questionably worth it when they could have designed the game very well without taxing their servers as heavily (see Guild Wars, for example). The real cost in infrastructure comes with the fact that everyone is always in the same instance in every area except for dungeons. But what exactly is the benefit of this? It provides for more interesting World PVP. But wait a second, let's think about World PVP in WoW. It didn't even really get interesting until expansions later... It was nearly unimplemented early on except for an honor tracker. The Warhammer Online MMO had very good World PVP... too bad it died because it wasn't WoW.
