When you're rich, and you're trying to one-up your rich peers, the whole point is that you spend money on something that you may not even use just to flaunt your wealth. Although it seems unlikely to me that this firearm was never used, it is still quite practical despite its ornate trimmings. When kings threw feasts, they would stuff 17 birds inside of each other and then not even eat that. Or have the chefs sew a pig and a chicken together into one grotesque animal, again, just for a centerpiece.
