I'm sorry but at what point do you put the blame on the customer for being overly paranoid and spineless?

The worst is when I place a take out order and they just hand me my food. I'd tip the kitchen staff if the food was good, but they give no opportunity to do that. If the business is losing money because too many people order take out and don't tip, then time to change your business model, because your serving staff isn't doing very much and is losing you money.

If someone is waiting on you or delivering to you, you're supposed to tip assuming they did their job well. That's really about the only time you should tip in the US. But it didn't used to be quite so mandatory. It has really been pushed hard over the past 10-15 years.

@priola7587 Insane, if true. Maybe it's a bit classist, but I couldn't imagine going to work in a field you studied in 4 years for, with a STEM degree, and then taking tips. I'm in a similar position (software developer) and I couldn't imagine getting a project done and then my boss just hands me a $20 bill and says "that's for your hard work buddy"

@NC7491 Yes. The equivalent would be going to a restaurant, having to pay a separate 20% "waiter fee," then asking for a tip on top of that. No... the point of the tip was that I was not paying you directly to begin with.

Sorry but you're just wrong on the prices part. You've clearly never traveled to Europe. I'm sure the first time you pay 5 Euros for a Coke with no refills you'll change your mind.
