I had a teacher in my high school who taught pre-calculus. She struck me as overbearing and a bit daft (I accidentally cheated in one of our quizzes because I thought we could use a calculator and she did not even notice, despite making rounds. Only found out from my friend after the fact). I was an AP student, so naturally I took AP calculus afterward. Our AP calculus teacher was uncompromising in her standards and generally a good teacher (I got the maximum score on the AP exam for that course and so did many other students in the class). She was known to get frustrated when she found that our foundational knowledge was lacking, on trigonometry if I recall right, and was seen arguing with the pre-cal teacher. Fortunately, it was quite a good school so it wasn't a problem systemic to the whole math department.

I went to a good high school and in my junior and senior years I got my first taste of this kind of bullshit. The whole highschool "GPA" score which was meaningless and got inflated by 1 point if you took AP classes. The rules for state college that allowed you to get automatic enrollment if you got in the top 10% of your class, but did not discriminate based on school, so our top-10 school in the state made it objectively harder to get into a state college because you were competing against smarter kids. My life changed completely at that point, I was set to go with my high school friends to college but I had to go to a different school instead and got a whole different group of friends.
