  1. it was emancipated convicts that first celebrated on jan 26th. you know those people that were forced here in chains to do hard labour for mostly petty crimes. most of whom even though pardoned were never allowed to return to their home country. they celebrated their freedom and the country they lived in. 210yrs the people of nsw (which used to encompass the eastern half of australia and new zealand) have celebrated on that date. some are descended from those very first convicts. so you should reconsider trying to change our culture because i can assure you aren't endearing yourself to anyone we are australians we don't whinge we celebrate what we have.
