there's an easy way to explain this to idiots. ukraine started persecuting ethno russians living in ukraine. eastern ukraine used to be russia, so it was populated by ethno russians. they didn't like being persecuted so succeeded from ukraine. an 8yr war ensued nato got involved, so russia got involved russia can't lose their rightful access to the black sea so staying out of it was not an option. ukraine was never going to win, the ethno russians of eastern ukraine would never re-join ukraine and russia would never give up access to the black sea without using every last asset they have.
