for chickens to immediately start laying when switching food, the food that stopped them laying would have to have something in it like a hormone or chemical that switches off egg laying. your theory on the old feed containing an egg laying supplement and the new feed missing it is unlikely as chickens don't require supplements in order to lay eggs. supplements might create more eggs, bigger eggs healthier birds but they aren't needed to switch on egg production.
