  2. i don't think the personal space thing explains americans loudness. australians have large personal space too but aren't unnecessarily loud in crowded settings when not drunk. example an aussie will go to a counter to order food and the conversation will be between the checkout operator and the person ordering, for anyone else to hear they'll have to be within 6 or 8' and listening in. but you get an american ordering and everyone in the room will know what they ordered and they may even yell across the room to friends or family asking what they want or even start a cross room yelling conversation deciding what they should order.
