  1. they aren't bringing them back to the mainland. they are sustaining a captive population on the mainland as a separate insurance in case the the devil facial tumour disease wipes them out in tasmania.

  2. i was thinking the spotted quoll would be closer to the opossum but quolls don't really climb much. brushtail possoms here could probably hold their own against an opossum they have different teeth but they can still bite hard as anything and they have the sharp claws for climbing. they wouldn't be interested in eating the opossum though as they are mostly vegetarian only eating the occasional insect,egg , nestling etc. so they would fight neither would have an advantage if the opossum played dead the brushtail would move on.
