i've always had resident magpies, i don't feed them specifically but all our meat scraps get tossed out in the yard. they live for a long time so they become used to you and their offspring will consider you part of the pack. you feel like a bit of a disney princess in australia as you walk outside your house and you can have magpies, kookaburras, lorikeets, pee wees, black ducks, teal ducks, butcher birds, galahs, cockatoos flying around landing on you or getting under your feet. i also have a frogmouth that hunts in the backyard at night they eat live prey so you can't make friends with them with food but he will happily fly down and catch insects and frogs that get stirred up as i walk. i'm amazed at how relaxed he is but he's been there 10yrs and they live for 35yrs so i guess they get used to you plus he could see me day/night 100% of the time i can only see him when it's light enough.
