  1. we don't salt roads in australia for obvious reasons but rust on the coastline from the salt air is common. as for decaying towns i don't think it's really a thing if a mine shuts down businesses that supported that mine will leave but the town will likely remain. short term mines are usually built with temporary infrastructure.
