  1. i think you have a misunderstanding of what an suv even is. the sport in suv isn't offroad ability that falls in the utility category. the sport was performance and comfort, it was a sporty comfortable vehicle that could rival a car but still had the utility to go offroad, carry gear and do work

  2. one problem though, the scout wasn't the 1st suv, if you wanted to call the first scout an suv then the willys jeep station wagon had already beaten it by a decade. and considering the willys wagon was "sportier" with a 6cyl it was more of an suv. the scout 80 wasn't any more comfortable than a hardtop jeep cj6 which was of similar proportions but more durable. but i don't think any of those are the first suv, the first suv was the jeep wagoneer it came with 6cyl or v8 it was the first civilian 4wd with optional independent front suspension, first 4wd with automatic transmission, first 4wd with disc brakes. but what made it the first suv was it was the first 4wd to be both comfortable and practical. while international were designing the scout 80 to play catch up with the cj, jeep was already well under way designing and tooling up to build the worlds first suv.
