Achieving communism requires first achieving socialism which, in the Marxist sense, simply means that workers own the means of production. That was achieved in both countries, and thus, not "state capitalist" (though China after Deng's market reforms in 1980 might be). Like, capitalism isn't merely when money exists. It's when capitalists own the means of production, and have the power to exploit their fellow man for accumulated labour power, be that in money or commodities. As for your notion of rebranding communism, forget it. The people who like this system and want to perpetuate it call literally everything communism. Does that mean it should be abandoned? Fuck no. Rather, it means more people need to stop feeding their egos with petty "wins" while the earth burns, and actually propagandize to the lowest, deepest masses of the proletariat and so-called "lumpenproletariat". The only way you can reverse brainwashing is by brain-building! I would encourage you to check out Black Red Guard on here.
