Indeed, the very existence of Amerikkka as a separate entity from its colonial master was so that George Washington -- the largest colonial land owner -- could violate the Peace and Friendship treaties between England and several First Nations. Those treaties stipulated that England would not claim any land west of the Hudson River Valley...land which Washington coveted. Of course, I'm not convinced this was done against England, but perhaps done in cahoots with them. Those capitalists liked slavery and colonial theft just fine, truth be told, but they needed a means to distance themselves from it to keep the religious folk from revolting...

We can talk about the will of the people and other such fluff, but let us not pretend that the referendum is worth a damn in international law. Annexation is usually when a much larger or more powerful entity absorbs a smaller one, whatever the rationale.
