  3. Taking the licks meant the story stayed about Gianforte. In spite of this, people are still blaming Jacobs. That narrative would have gained more traction if Jacobs fought back.

  4. Also, in fairness, Jacobs probably didn't abstain from retaliation based on a cogent analysis of the complexities of the situation. Is that surprising, though? I don't think there are many actual scrappers in universities, let alone j-school.

If eyewitness accounts are to be believed, Gianforte picked up Jacobs by the neck with both hands and threw him to the ground. This situation is without parallel in living memory, so I doubt journos will start training to fend off political candidates who lose their shit.
