Both Russia and NATO want to control that land for vital strategic reasons, which is why Ukraine (READ: Amerikkka) sought to "Ukrainify" the culturally Russian people of Donbass, and why Putin invaded to ensure that the land is inhabited and controlled by people loyal to Moscow. I blame Khrushchev, who gave Donbass to UkSSR.
