Abolishing chattel slavery was a boon to landowners. It meant that they could still extract labour from African slaves <ahem> sharecroppers while pushing the cost of their upkeep onto them. Also, as the landowners had no remaining fiduciary interest in keeping those people alive, working them to death or even l**ching them -- as an example to others, or to let oppressed white peasants blow off steam about their exploitation at the hands of the feudal landlord class -- became more prevalent.

@tweedy4sg Mexico is as illegitimate as the US. Ditto Canada, Australia, Brazil, Israel and South Africa. These are all European settler colonies, with no moral basis. They exist at the sharp end of a sword. Do you know about "terra nullius"? The Treaties of Tordesillas and Zaragoza? Manifest Destiny? These are the founding principles for all those colonial projects.
