Brought in on himself. His antisocial/anti-government beliefs are why his kid was dumb enough to fire on federal officers and his refusal to surrender is what put the rest of his family at risk (and led to more deaths.) He deserved those charges and that settlement he got should have gone to the other surviving family members alone, not him. That said, those in charge of the government's side of things deserved some punishment themselves for going in way too hard.

That's more or less how the theory goes. Except that it was the threat of imminent explosion rather than an actual explosion that forced them into the life boat. They had been in stormy weather for some time prior and it's thought that the wooden casks storing the alcohol leaked a bit as the ship was tossed about. The weather would also have led to the cargo hold being closed up to prevent rain/sea water from getting in. As a result, the fumes built up to a dangerous level and once detected, would have led to a rushed effort to leave the ship until the hold could air out. A procedure that wasn't uncommon on ships transporting dangerous chemicals at the time. There are a few theories concerning what caused the rope connecting the life boat to the ship to fail but whatever the reason, the fact that they had left the ship with the sails still rigged and without the anchor dropped meant that unless they were in very calm conditions, they would never have been able to catch up with it by rowing.

@trendom8164 Not necessarily. Whether cut or snapped, the end of the rope would have ended up heavily frayed. Especially after being exposed to the elements for quite awhile before the ship was discovered.

When it comes to JFK, it probably was a form of suicide. He was in constant pain from his war injury and was going through each day knocking back pain pills with scotch. He bungled almost everything important he did as President and had to be "rescued" often. His affairs were becoming a major problem. While all of that was going on, he fought more and more with the secret service over security measures. With him overriding more and more precautions as time went by making himself an increasingly easier target for anyone who wanted him gone. Combine all of that with the fact that being assassinated in office pretty much causes historians to politely overlook failures and overhype accomplishments and, like Lincoln, going out of one's way to be easy to kill doesn't look like such a bad way to wrap things up.

The only issue I have with how he was treated is their not putting him into a medically induced coma. They would have still been able to treat him but he wouldn't have had to feel any of it.

You can call it entrapment if you want, but he could have simply said no. He was willing to break the law for someone he didn't even know well. That doesn't exactly help his image. That said, the whole thing was a mess on both sides. He was an idiot who unnecessarily put his family at risk (leading to some of their deaths) and the government went in way too hard considering the actual charges. Had I been on the jury deciding how much money he got from the government, I wouldn't have awarded him anywhere near what he got.

His behavior more or less proved the neighbor right in being concerned. Dude was an antisocial nutcase who wound up getting family members killed rather than surrender peacefully. One could just as easily say that the Oklahoma City bombing wouldn't have occurred had dude simply surrendered and let the mess be decided in court by a jury of his peers.

@Devilinabag Bundy was just your run of the mill entitled a**hole. He was entirely in the wrong and he knew it. Unfortunately there were a handful of very gullible anti-government try-hards who fell for his victim act. Nothing to be admired there. If anything, that whole farce only served to give preppers an even worse reputation than they already had.

@roflchiefmcjoflchief1791 Dude's mostly right. The "legend" of Ruby Ridge and what actually went down are two different things. In the end, you had an antisocial nutcase with ties to radical groups do something stupid (and illegal) and rather than surrender, he decided to put his whole family at risk instead (getting some of them killed as a result.) The fact that the government themselves handled it exceptionally poorly doesn't change that.
