  2. I think it's situational. I had an old Camaro I was rebuilding slowly over a couple of years. I finally got it running and took it out to test it a few times. Finally, I got a cruiser behind me who I could tell was going to blue light me and I was trying to figure out what I did wrong. Right before he hit the lights it occurred to me that I hadn't taken care of the registration (over a year out of date.) He pulls me over and before he gets to the car I remember than I hadn't put it on my insurance either (required in my state.) He asked if I knew why he pulled me over, I just said registration. He acted surprised that I admitted it and asked me for proof of insurance. I was immediately honest which I could tell did catch him by surprise. We talked for a bit about why and he said he appreciated the honesty. When he came back from running my license he told me he wasn't going to ticket me for the registration (and to go take care of it since the clerk was still open.) Then, in a very apologetic tone, he said he couldn't let the lack of insurance slide. I was cool with it (my fault after all) and he winked and told me that it likely wouldn't cost me anything as long as I had it insured before the traffic court date. When I went to court, the judge called me up to the bench, covered the mike and told me I must have made one hell of a good impression on the officer as he had actually bothered to include on the court copy of the ticket that I had been completely honest the entire time and hadn't given him any attitude. Something the judge had never seen before. I showed him my proof of insurance and was done. No fine or anything.
