Well, the gun he was using was an exact replica of a gun that was so notorious for misfiring with the hammer down and no trigger contact that it spawned the "cowboy load" (leaving the chamber in front of the hammer unloaded) pretty much by itself. So what he's claiming is actually possible. Especially if the armorer hadn't been maintaining it well enough to limit the amount of play the hammer has (which she probably hadn't since they had her pulling double duty as both the propmaster and the armorer.) He might be telling the truth... or he might not. In the end, it was the overall lack of safety on the set in general that's most to blame. Something was bound to go horribly wrong eventually.

@granthagen2996 You can if that gun happens to be an old Colt .45 revolver or an exact replica of it... which the gun in question happens to have been. They have a bit of a design flaw with their hammer/firing pin that makes them prone to misfiring like he described when jolted. The original model was what led cowboys to leave the chamber in front of the hammer unloaded. They had a nasty habit of firing while in the holster or when being drawn. Also, not all of their replicas come with the block. Those used on movie sets usually don't have them.
