Your information is a bit off. The reports made by those involved didn't claim that the round that struck the officer came from the kid's gun. The officer who shot the kid stated that the kid's gun went of during the struggle and that one of the other officers reacted in a way that made him think they had been hit (that officer stated that the concussive force from the gun going caught him off guard and he staggered back a couple of steps thinking he may have been hit.) The struggle continued briefly and he fired two shots out of fear for the safety of the other officers and himself. The reports made clear that once the dust had settled it was apparent that it was one of the two shots fired by the officer that had hit the wounded officer and that the round from the kid's gun had hit a nearby trashcan.
