@gottgold9776 Putin's getting on in years and it's starting to show. There have been a couple of press conferences where he clearly has senile eyes like Biden (that blank wide pupil 1,000 yard stare.) Even without that, he's always been about brute force over finesse. Intelligence has never been his strong suit. Ruthlessness is his claim to fame. Take away his nukes, assassinations of any who oppose him internally, as well as his backing by the Russian mafia and oligarchs and he'd have been outplayed and gone long ago. We're talking about someone whose foreign policy has simply been to see which side the US takes and then take the other...regardless of the effect of those decisions on his country. That doesn't exactly require much thought. Edit: Also, he thought this invasion was a good idea...even after decades of funneling military funding into his and his buddies private bank accounts leaving them without proper funding for maintenance. Then he wonders why his tanks can't go five miles without breaking down and his air power is so unreliable compared to his peer's. Then, there's his foolish reliance on conscript troops and brutal tactics which lower the morale of the soldiers who have to carry them out. Back in the day, the Soviet army had Commissars to deal with the morale issue. Now they have to use high command and get them killed at a ridiculously high rate by having to go to the front and crack the whip themselves.

China is disgusted with Putin and likely aren't going to go out of their way to help Russia this time...though they may help themselves to the areas in eastern Russia they've been wanting to get ahold of for decades.

Russia couldn't properly fund this invasion prior to the sanctions anyway. Pooty and friends have been funneling military funds into their own pockets since he took power. Their maintenance is a joke and the reason their armor can't go five miles without breaking down (the reason for that embarassing convoy stall they had in Ukraine.) If it weren't for cheap (often useless) conscript troops inflating the ranks, they wouldn't even be able to afford to field anything resembling an army.

Yeah, apparently they're still doing well enough to decline the generous 30 silver offered to them by Ukraine on their ambassador's way out of the country...Considering the value of the rubles their getting paid by Russia, that silver could have gone a long way.
