  1. Depopulation of the Soviet countryside began after the death of Stalin. My parents, Soviet babyboomers born in 1946 and 1948, left their villages after finishing school and moved to Kyiv. Millions young villagers did just that for years, my guess close to 80%, to escape collective farms and get better jobs in the Soviet cities. By early 1980s villages started dying out. Parents, born in the early 1900s, were dying and their kids stayed in the cities. I saw abandoned homes everywhere already in the 80s in Northern Ukraine, and it was only getting worse.
