The problem with the "there is no multiverse" terminology is that it makes a statement about unmeasurable things. We know that special relativity and general relativity restrict large volumes of the universe to "unobservable" status. We can, for instance, not know what is happening on Mars, right this moment. It takes roughly 3-22 minutes for a signal from Mars to us and vice versa. Reality on Mars during those delays is "off-limits" to us. Does that mean that nothing is happening on Mars? Of course not. It simply means we have to accept these limitations in knowledge. The universe "outside" of the observable universe falls into the same category. It could be doing a lot of things and we can't know. We can model, we can extrapolate, but we can't know. Not this way and not that. The real function of the responsible educator is to teach people to cope with these kinds of limitations in a rational manner. With regards to religion... to compare multiverse models (which are based on speculative but precise reasoning) to religion gives too much credit to religion. There is nothing in religion that comes even close to the level of detail and care that theoretical physicists are using.
