  4. The problem is not institutional but financial. Everybody can build a fission reactor quickly. Everybody can build a fission reactor cheaply. Everybody can build a fission reactor safely. Nobody can build a fission reactor quickly, cheaply and safely.

  5. Depends on what you mean by "make it work". We already have made it work at the level of a physics experiment. We are far away from a power plant and we are much, much farther away from a power plant that makes sense economically.

  6.  @Leif-yv5ql  I am pretty sure fusion will be more than viable for nuclear fusion drives in space where radiation shielding isn't required and we can let a lot of neutrons escape. Here on Earth? Probably not. What's not sustainable about solar and wind power? We have dozens, if not a hundred times more agricultural area than we will ever need for solar and the combination of both seems to be quite efficient, especially in more arid zones, which we will have more of because of global warming. Population growth has basically stopped and resource utilization is being optimized with ever tighter recycling chains.
