Space is not a thing. It doesn't have the properties of things. The waterfall analogy is nice, but it also only gets you so far.

If dark energy keeps increasing, then black hole lifetime is probably dominated by the increase and could be as short as tens of billions of years, if I remember some older papers correctly. Black holes gets "dissolved" by the ever higher negative energy density of dark energy, so to speak. If dark energy is really just a cosmological constant or zero, then black hole lifetime is really very, very long.

@mechtheist There is very little energy in small black holes. It's completely inconsequential. Hawking radiation for a solar mass black hole is basically undetectable with any known detector technology that I am aware of.

Black holes are behaving like all other mass-energy. There is no net red shift from a homogeneous mass distribution.
