That's cool... it works because the model has free parameters. Give me eight parameters and I can fit an elephant. Might as well go back to epicyles. ;-)

"Dark matter" is the name for the observation that there seems to be more gravitation than is being predicted by Newton for the amount of visible matter. Dark matter fields are a perfectly testable hypothesis to explain the dark matter observation. If we fail to find them in microscopic experiments, then they can be ruled out. That is exactly how science should work. This is much, much harder with modified theories of gravity. There would be no such microscopic tests. We can add as many higher order terms as we like and slap an arbitrary coupling coefficient on every one of those terms and there is no microscopic test to rule them out. I find that much less "scientific".
