  1. The basic problem of high energy physics can be summed up in a few words: We are trying to measure the spectrum of the physical vacuum. Atomic physics measures the spectra of atoms. Nuclear physics measures the spectra of nuclei. In a sense even gravitational physics is trying to measure the spectra of gravitating systems now (see LIGO and gravitational waves). The top level questions are not all that hard, but you are right: the details are awfully confusing. A relevant paper enables other people to make significant progress in a field and it opens up new ways of thinking about old problems.

  2. Can you please explain how the capitalists are making money with LHC, which after planetary sciences and the moon landing is probably the largest and most expensive science project in the world? Oh, yeah, please also show us how the system commodified the Voyager probes and the Mars landers. ;-)
